On October 19, the participants of the project “TechGirls Georgia” were awarded with certificates. The first phase of the project, implemented in collaboration with the Georgian Community of Germany and the Iliauni Industrial Innovation Laboratory FabLab Iliauni and with the financial support of the German Society for International Cooperation / Center for International Migration and Development (GIZ / CIM), has been completed.
“The project was implemented by the Georgian community in Germany, funded by GIZ, in cooperation with Ilia State University, on the basis of the Iliauni Industrial and Innovation Laboratory, FabLab. During this project, 15 girls from Tbilisi and 10 from Akhmeta studied the basics of programming, the basics of microelectronics using kaliopemin, worked with drones and set up technology clubs. They also worked with successful mentor women in technology to gain more knowledge about technology. These types of projects are very important for Georgia, because they help to arouse girls’ interest in technology and computer science. Cooperation in such projects is especially important for Ilia State University,” said Nana Dikhaminjia, Director of the Ilia State University Innovation and Technology Center.
“This project is very important for our program, because, on the one hand, we support the involvement of the Georgian Diaspora in Germany in the development of the country in Georgia and, on the other hand, strengthen local partner organizations. In addition, the target groups were young women, schoolgirls, who want to be motivated by this project to choose to study IT and technical sciences in the future and thus have better employment opportunities in the labor market, “- Irma Tsereteli, (CIM / GIZ) Program: Migration and Diaspora Coordinator in Georgia.
The aim of the project was to increase the representation of women in the field of digital technologies, to overcome stereotypes in this field and to raise the awareness of girls. To achieve this goal, 25 student girls (Classes VIII-XI) were selected within the project, who were in the stage of choosing a profession. The project, which ran from June to August, included both training sessions and a mentoring program. As part of the mentoring program, the girls met successful people in the field of technology and got acquainted with the many opportunities and perspectives in the field of digital technology. Participants in the one-week camps in July and August explored the components of microelectronics and the basics of programming through Calliope mini. As a result of the project, tech girls’ clubs were established in Tbilisi and Akhmeta, which will give participants the opportunity to carry out various activities in the field of technology and share the knowledge gained through the project with their peers.
First of all, what I want to highlight: The results obtained after the completion of the project are: We have established a club of tech girls, within which the girls will be able to use the techniques that were studied during the project. I would also like to mention that at the end of the project we conducted a survey and more than 90% of the participating girls said that they were very interested in this field and were going to continue their studies in technology, ”said Nino Janashia, ,,TechGirls Georgia’’ Project Manager; Member of the Georgian community in Germany.
“This project aroused my interest in technology even more and helped me to choose a future career. During the project, I met many interesting people and opened the door for even greater opportunities, ”said Lika Chitishvili, school child of the 12th class of Tbilisi Public School No. 161
“It was a great honor for me to participate in this project, I met many interesting people and learned many interesting things. All this gives me a great opportunity to use my knowledge in more things in the future, “- Nutsa Mirtskhulava, school child of the 10th class of Tbilisi Public School No. 53
