The ,,TechGirls Georgia’’ project, implemented in collaboration with the Georgian Community of Germany and the Iliauni Industrial Innovation Laboratory FabLab Iliauni and with the financial support of the German Society for International Cooperation / Center for International Migration and Development (GIZ / CIM), has been launched.
The event opened at the Iliauni Industrial Innovation Laboratory.
The beneficiaries of the program, the girls selected through a competition, who will learn to write code within the project, met and congratulated the success of Ilia State University Rector Giga Zedania and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Georgia Hubert Knirsch.
The opening event was attended by Eva Maria Knirsch, Representative of Informatics and English Language Specialist of Munich Technical University in Georgia, Nana Dikhaminjia, Vice-Rector of Ilia State University, Irina Chikhladze, Organizer of ,,TechGirls Georgia’’ Project and Member of the Board of the Georgian Community in Germany, Lasha Enukidze, Head of the Migration and Diaspora Program of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).
“This is an important event, because it took place at the intersection of two processes – the first is to promote the development of technology in Georgia, the second – more involvement of women in socio-economic-educational and other processes. It is very important to cross these two processes, because in fact it is part of a single movement, a movement that involves development, including economic, technological, scientific, emancipation, obviously giving women and them a much bigger role in public life. It is noteworthy that our German partners, who have always been partners and friends, help us in this and we are sure that this will not be a one-time event, but will give a basis for intensive work in this direction, “- said Giga Zedania, Rector of Ilia State University.
“I believe that information technology skills are very important for the girls themselves, for their professional development, as well as for young women and ethnic minorities living in different regions of Georgia. Information technology is a demanded profession. It is also important for the economic development of Georgia, investors, especially foreign investors, need young people who are well versed in information technology and computer science, this program serves this, “- said Hubert Krinsch, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to Georgia.
“I think it is very important for young women to be interested in technological topics and directions. It is a pleasure to work with a team of women and men, precisely because together they find a better solution. Lots of women do not master computer science, math or science because they think that they are not as strong as men, they think that boys know more than we do, that is why they are ashamed, they do not dare to study. It is with the help of such projects that it becomes clear to them that it is possible to study these sciences, they realize that with the help of an algorithm in programming it is possible to solve a problem. “As soon as they understand how it all works, girls and young women will be happy to do it and join women in technology,” said Eva Maria Knirsch, representative of the Technical University of Munich in Georgia, specialist in informatics and English language.
“Today, technological and engineering development is very important for all countries and especially to attract more girls and women in these areas. The project “TechGirls” serves just that. It is very important for us that this program was started together with Ilia State University,’’ – Nana Dikhaminjia, Vice-Rector of Iliauni in the field of technology.
The goal of the ,,TechGirls Georgia’’ project is to increase the representation of women in the field of digital technologies, to overcome stereotypes in this field and to raise the awareness of girls.
To achieve this goal, the project selected girls (Classes VIII-XI) who are in the process of choosing a future profession. The selected participants will learn the basics of programming / code writing, establish a tech girl club and participate in the creation of an information-educational online platform.
The project also envisages a mentoring program and introduces the multifaceted opportunities and perspectives in the field of digital technologies.
